New halloween policy

Halloween is not really a Filipino tradition. We never had that when we were growing up. We just went to the cemetery where we had a reunion with all our living relatives.

Our parish has a new policy on Halloween now. Our priest said grownups shouldn't make kids dress up as ghosts or monsters.

Halloween comes from All Hallows Evening or the evening of all holy people or saints. He said kids should dress up as saints!

But where's the fun in that? Unless you read up on how they died for their faith!

And here are more gruesome deaths of saints! http://listverse.com/2009/03/28/10-strange-legends-and-images-of-saints/

real horror

Lots of things scared us when we were kids but nothing's scarier than grown-up horrors!

horror movie

This is based on a true story! The japanese horror trend was just starting when I saw Ringu. I saw it on the big screen and while I loved the surprising twist, I wasn't really scared. That is, until I got home and everyone was already asleep. I watched some TV and when I was about to go to sleep, I  turned off the TV and started remembering the creepy scenes from the movie. Then I turned off the lights and my imagination just went crazy. I had a hard time sleeping that night and I swore I'd never watch another horror movie again!

...Then I watched The Grudge, and The Curse, and The Conjuring... gahd! Why do I keep watchng scary movies when I know I just scare myself in the end?

Comics

Forgive me for this very insider joke. Only fans of the Inquirer comics will get it.  This is my tribute to the paper's Pinoy comic strips: Jess Abrera's A. Lipin, Elizabeth Chionglo's Loveknots, Manix Abrera's Kiko Machine, Maria Coll's Tuldok and of course, Pol Medina's Pugad Baboy, which we were very sad to lose this year.
I've only been doing the daily comic strip for a few months and it is tough! So I have to give much respect to these guys for consistently coming out with great work all these years! I salute you!

Throwback TV #3

Today's throwback TV episode is about my guilty pleasure in the 90s---Marimar! This show was huge back then!
The premise of a poor girl who falls in love with a rich boy  and then gets left behind but gets reinvented into a rich woman who plots her revenge is old hat now but back then, it was outrageous and totally unheard of!
We were used to heroines who suffered in silence and never fought back.

Marimar was a firecracker who wasn't afraid to be just as cruel as the villains and we loved her for it!

The funny thing is, no one could believe that Marimar and Bella were the same person! Nagsuklay lang at nagdamit nang maayos, di na nakilala?

Throwback TV 2

Oops, no animated strip today! I had a deadline so I had to whip this one out fast! This isn't exactly how I remembered it in the original Mara Clara soap, but it's pretty close to how that show led us on for years! It was only when the mexican soap Marimar came that the Pinoy soap picked up its pace.

Throwback TV

Note: The scene on the TV actually came from the afternoon soap, Anna Luna!

In the 80's there was Anna Lisa and Flor de Luna but in the 90's, there was Anna Luna, about a girl who lost her family in a ship accident so she had to live with some rich relatives who mistreated her.

But man, the writing was so dumb! And this was the time before cable so the audience who watched this in the afternoon had no choice but to put up with it.

The show ran for years but changed channels later and we really didn't see how it ended. Nor did we care.

Bus-riding tip #2

Here's another bus-riding tip for all you girls out there: Bring an umbrella!

Meanwhile, I am really feeling the pressure to come up with new strips as soon as I can! I've run out of old strips to run on the Libre/print edition! I have a lot more respect now for all the comic strip artists who've been doing this for years!!!
